If you've been paying attention to hosting and deployment conversations over the past couple of years, you've probably noticed the word "edge" showing up everywhere. Edge functions, edge rendering, edge networks, deploy to the edge. It can start to feel like another layer of industry jargon — and honestly, some of it is.

But underneath the buzzword dust, edge computing represents a real and meaningful shift in how websites deliver content to users. It's already affecting performance benchmarks, pricing conversations, and architecture decisions on projects we work on. And if you're planning a new website or a significant rebuild in 2026, it's worth understanding what edge deployments actually are — not in abstract terms, but in terms of what they change for your site and your users.

What "The Edge" Actually Means

Traditional web hosting works something like this: your server lives in a data center somewhere — say, Virginia or Oregon — and when a user in Los Angeles or London requests a page, that request travels to the data center, your server processes it, and the response travels back. If your server is far from your user, that round trip adds latency. You feel it as a slightly slower page load.

A CDN (Content Delivery Network) improved this by caching static files — images, CSS, JavaScript — at servers distributed globally. Your HTML was still generated in one place, but the assets loaded from wherever was geographically closest to the user.

Edge computing takes this further. Instead of just caching static assets, you can now run actual code — logic, personalization, authentication checks, API calls — at those distributed network nodes. Platforms like Cloudflare Workers, Vercel Edge Functions, and Netlify Edge Functions let you execute server-side logic at locations physically close to your users, anywhere in the world.

The result: faster response times for server-side operations, not just static files. For the right use cases, this is a significant performance improvement.

Where Edge Deployments Make a Real Difference

Not every website benefits equally from edge deployment. It's worth being honest about where it helps versus where it's overkill.

Globally distributed audiences. If your site serves users across multiple continents — an international e-commerce store, a SaaS product with users in North America, Europe, and Asia — edge deployment can meaningfully reduce latency for everyone. When server-side rendering happens 30 miles from the user instead of 3,000 miles, you notice it in time-to-first-byte numbers.

Personalization at the edge. One of the most practical uses is personalizing content without a round trip to an origin server. Showing different content based on geography, routing logged-in vs. anonymous users differently, or A/B testing at the infrastructure level — these can all happen at the edge before the response even starts loading. That means you get personalization without the performance penalty that usually comes with it.

Authentication and redirects. Middleware tasks — checking if a user is authenticated before serving a page, enforcing redirects, handling locale routing — are well-suited to edge functions. They're fast operations that don't need a full server environment, and running them at the edge keeps the experience snappy.

Static sites with dynamic behavior. A statically generated site (Gatsby, Astro, Eleventy) can use edge functions for the parts that need to be dynamic — form submissions, user-specific content, search — without converting the whole site to a server-rendered architecture. You get the performance profile of a static site with the flexibility to add dynamic features where needed.

The Real Limitations (and Why They Matter)

Edge computing has genuine tradeoffs, and anyone who doesn't mention them is selling you something.

CPU time limits are strict. Cloudflare Workers allows 50ms of CPU time per request. Vercel Edge Functions cap at 25ms. These aren't soft limits — if your function runs over, the request fails. That means edge functions are not the right place for heavy computation, complex database queries, or anything that might need real processing time. They're designed for fast, lightweight operations. If your logic is more than that, you need a regular serverless function or a traditional server.

Database access gets complicated. Most traditional databases — your typical MySQL or PostgreSQL instance — aren't designed to accept connections from hundreds of edge locations simultaneously. The connection overhead alone can negate the performance benefits. Solutions exist: distributed databases like PlanetScale, Turso, and Cloudflare D1 are built with edge access in mind, but they require specific architectural decisions and don't always fit an existing stack.

For Drupal and WordPress projects — which make up a significant portion of what we build at ldnddev — this is a real consideration. Both platforms rely heavily on database-driven content rendering. Full edge deployment for a WordPress or Drupal site isn't straightforward. You can edge-cache rendered pages and run middleware at the edge, but running the full application at the edge requires significant architectural changes that may not be worth the complexity for most client projects.

Cold starts are mostly solved, but not entirely. Earlier generations of serverless functions had noticeable cold start latency — the first request after idle would be slow. Edge runtimes have largely addressed this (Vercel Edge Functions advertise 0ms cold starts), but it's worth verifying for whichever platform you're evaluating.

Debugging is harder. Distributed execution means distributed failure modes. When something goes wrong at the edge, tracing it is more complex than debugging a traditional server. Logging, monitoring, and error tracking tooling for edge functions is improving but still less mature than what you'd get with a conventional backend.

Cloudflare Workers vs. Vercel Edge Functions: The Practical Difference

The two platforms you'll hear about most for edge deployments are Cloudflare Workers and Vercel Edge Functions. They're similar in concept but different in where they fit.

Cloudflare Workers runs on Cloudflare's network — over 300 data center locations globally, more than any competitor. It's platform-agnostic: you're not locked into a particular frontend framework. It supports frameworks like Hono, Remix, and SvelteKit well, and pairs naturally with Cloudflare Pages for full-stack static + edge setups. The CPU limit is 50ms on the base plan. It's flexible, well-documented, and mature.

Vercel Edge Functions are the natural fit for Next.js projects. They're deeply integrated into the Vercel platform's build and deployment pipeline, which makes them easy to use if you're already in that ecosystem. The 0ms cold start comes from the Edge Runtime, which is a lighter-weight V8 environment. The 25ms CPU limit is tighter than Cloudflare, so you need to keep functions lean.

Netlify Edge Functions run on Deno under the hood, which is a different runtime from the V8 isolates that Cloudflare and Vercel use. It's less commonly chosen for new projects right now, but it's a solid option if Netlify is already your platform.

The honest recommendation: choose the edge platform that fits your existing hosting setup and framework choices. The performance differences between the major providers are real but marginal for most projects. What matters more is whether edge deployment is the right architectural choice for the project at hand — and not all projects need it.

What This Means for Drupal and WordPress Projects

For the types of sites we build most often — Drupal and WordPress platforms, custom web builds, marketing sites with CMS backends — edge deployment is a tool worth understanding but not something to apply blindly.

Where it fits well: edge caching for high-traffic pages, middleware for geo-based routing or authentication, A/B testing infrastructure, and performance optimization for sites with a global audience. These are use cases where edge functions add clear, measurable value without requiring you to rearchitect your entire application.

Where it doesn't fit: replacing your origin server for a CMS-driven site. WordPress and Drupal are not edge-native applications. Trying to run them entirely at the edge creates more problems than it solves. The better approach for most projects is a well-configured origin server combined with smart edge caching — serving cached rendered pages from the edge to most users, and only hitting the origin when content has changed.

Platforms like Cloudflare's caching layer, combined with a properly configured WordPress or Drupal caching setup (WP Rocket, Drupal's Internal Page Cache), can deliver many of the performance benefits of edge deployment without requiring an architectural overhaul. That's usually the right starting point before considering more complex edge deployments.

The Bottom Line

Edge computing is a real advancement in web infrastructure, not just hype. Running code closer to your users reduces latency, improves personalization options, and can meaningfully impact the performance metrics that affect both user experience and SEO.

But it's a tool, not a default. The right question isn't "should we use edge deployment?" It's "what does our site actually need, and is edge the most practical way to get there?" For global SaaS products and high-traffic consumer apps, edge architecture is increasingly the obvious choice. For a regional business website or a mid-sized Drupal build, smart caching at the edge is likely all you need.
